Using sesearch papers in undergraduate course
I am teaching a Cell Biology Year 2 module with a strong focus on gaining of transferrable skills, including problem solving and independent learning skills. To this end, there is emphasis on the use of research papers both in the lectures as well as in student assessments and assignments. My paper below describes the rationale behind this, how I have implemented the use of research papers and what the outcomes have been.
Writing assignments in Cell Biology module
Until some years ago, we used to have a writing assignment. In this assignment, the students had to wriite a 1,000 word commentary on a recent research paper. I thought that this was a very effective and useful assignment. The only problem was that reading over 200 assays each semester wasn’t exactly fun. Which is why I have introduced other assignments that make the marking process more visual, like video and diagram assignments (see below).
Nonetheless, some of the Cell Bio students have actually published their excellent assays, with.a little help from myself. Here are some examples of small publications that started with a Cell Biology writing assignment.
Pallavi Panda: Superoxide Dismutase Switch in Breast Cancer: A Potential Target for Cancer Therapy.
Adrian Tan Hong Ji: Non-Enzymatic Acetylation in Alkaline Environments.
Lim Han Qi, Hans: A Coupled Understanding of UCP2 Function and Metabolic Reprogramming.
Rabi’Atul ‘Adawiyah Binte Minhat: A Possible Approach for Oral Drug Delivery of Nanoparticles.
Wong Yin Kwan: Safe and Efficient Reprogramming of Somatic Cells into Stem Cells in Living Tissue.
